HEALTH: Diabetes and Zylitol

Zylitol is a natural sweetener that tastes like sugar and it is low on the glycemic index.

Here is a quote from ezinearticles.com

"Fortunately, we don’t have to give up our sweet tooth just because sugar is bad for us.
Instead, we can turn to xylitol. This sweetener is metabolized very slowly, unlike refined white sugar, and xylitol is also very low on the glycemic index. There are no peaks and valleys of blood sugar levels with xylitol. Instead, the blood sugar levels are stabilized. Because of this cravings for refined carbs and sugar are reduced or eliminated altogether. Individuals with diabetes will be able to eat foods sweetened with this sweetener because it does not increase insulin levels. In fact, it helps keep insulin levels low, which may help keep you looking and feeling younger longer."

Here is a quote from http://www.suite101.com/

"If xylitol has never been used before, eating a large amount can cause diarrhea. The bowel adjusts quickly to xylitol, however, so this side effect is usually short-lived. Loose stools can be avoided by beginning with small servings of xylitol (20-40 grams each), gradually increasing intake as tolerated, and using it regularly."

I prefer zylitol instead of stevia. There is no aftertaste with xylitol.
You say zylitol, I say xylitol. Oh well, same thing.
